Overfed and Under Caffeinated in Nantucket: Things to Do and Places to Go

Photography by Abby Harris

Despite its small size, Nantucket still offers plenty to do for the wandering traveler. I’ve, personally, found it difficult to grow bored in a place this charming. If charter fishing and yachting are in your budget, by all means, go for it! If that’s not your cup of tea, we have plenty of other options for you to explore on Island.

THE BEACHES

Are 100% no strings attached FREE (and so is parking!)

If that isn’t enticing enough for you (lmk where you’re from OKAY), these beaches are pristine and picture perfect. Depending on what side of the island you are one, you can find calm water or large waves. Whichever suits your fancy.

NORTHWEST- Steps Beach

Named fondly after the steps you trek to and from the beach, it offers one of the most beautiful views on the island. The current is calm, the water is usually pretty clear. Late summer brings warm temperatures. Prime place to go dog spotting.

SOUTH SHORE – Cisco Beach

Cisco is a surfers paradise. You’ll even find Nantucket Surf School parked along its shores if you’re interested in taking on the challenge. Disclaimer: Cisco has been heavily impacted by erosion. The beach is super narrow & surrounded by cliffs. Enjoy it before a chunk of the island drops off into the sea.

Any Beach that isn’t private

Unless otherwise noted, its fair game! Some beaches are merely labeled with a numbered marker. It’s not uncommon to have a stretch of land to yourself, just make sure you’re not trespassing, fam.

THE VIEWS

Sankaty Head Lighthouse

Quite possibly the best sunset on this end of the island. Go for the insane views and the history, leave after you’ve taken 782 photos and the bugs get to you. But seriously, so worth it.

Brant Point Lighthouse

Just a short stroll out of the center of town, you’ll find a beautiful bit of beach and the Brant Point Lighthouse. It doesn’t seem to matter what time of day you come, there are always gorgeous views and the water here is very clear. You can do your shell collecting here as well!

*Note: If you’re taking the boat back to the mainland, you must throw a penny into the water as you pass the lighthouse on your way out – this means you’ll be back!
